Back To School Homework Table

Today I’m joining in series of Blog With Friends theme collaborations. Each month a group of bloggers get together and each publish a project based on a theme. In any given month there may have a recipe, sewing tutorial, crafts projects, book review and/or a technology post all related to the theme of the month. Links to all those participating are at the bottom of this post! Thanks to Karen of Baking in a Tornado for all she does with these collaborations!!

“Why did you refinish my firewood???” Dr. Evil texted me when he found our kitchen table in the garage.

This table. This poor old table has seen much better days. We bought it 12 years ago somewhat on a whim (us, implusive? no….never). It is made of solid pine. Did you know solid pine is solid, heavy, and SOFT? Within 45 minutes of owning this table it had it’s first ownership mark. Eldest chewed on the leg and it made marks. Awesome, right?

Over the years, the table has become more tired and abused. Nail polish, Easter egg dye, carvings by children and pumpkin knives have left their marks. And two weeks ago, the table was nearly replaced. We went looking for a new set of couches and found a table. Given our impulsive shopping methods I purposely left my wallet at home. We found a table that was wonderful however given we NEED a new mattress, our couches are older than three of the kids and smell like dog, and our carpet has been chewed on by dogs, a table is fourth (at least) on the list.

Dr. Evil went on travel. I hatched a plan. I had the Bigs help me get the table out of the house and into the garage. Off to the Home Depot I went and bought some basic supplies. Sand paper of two different grits, clear poly, and staining pads.

For two nights I sanded. Not much pressure was required. Sanding with the grain and in even strokes was my goal.  I started the varnish. Even strokes with the grain across the entire surface for each stroke. Some trial and error showed me stopping half way across the table left streaks and air bubbles in the varnish. After three coats I used a super fine grit sand paper to rid the table of any streaks. Three more coats of poly and …. TA DAH! My kids now have a place to do homework and will no longer get splinters while they study!!

I saved us $970. The table we were looking at was $1000.  My supplies were only $30. (I already owned the hand held sander.)

Today’s post is a writing challenge. This is how it works: participating bloggers picked 4 – 6 words or short phrases for someone else to craft into a post. All words must be used at least once and all the posts will be unique as each writer has received their own set of words. That’s the challenge, here’s a fun twist; no one who’s participating knows who got their words and in what direction the writer will take them. Until now.

At the end of this post you’ll find links to the other blogs featuring this challenge. Check them all out, see what words they got and how they used them.

I’m using: green ~ Irish ~ beer ~ sappy ~ juke box ~ closed the bar

Well it’s that time of year again.  The time when even those with a little Irish in our heritage let our Green show to the world.  My father insists our Irish left us via diapers as babies and only our German heritage remains.  I beg to differ.

My Littlest had to dress as a green crayon for her most recent school concert.  (They have been doing more a show/theme than simply a concert – it’s actually pretty cool.)  I happily spent $10 buying her a little green skirt knowing full well she could utilize it on St. Patrick’s Day.  And if you know me at all buying something full price is NOT something I do lightly.  I know it’s a little sappy but she’s still little enough she’ll let me pick out her clothing for the day and I grab onto those moments when I possible.

Every year for the past four or five years I’ve run a race the weekend before (or of if it falls on) St. Patrick’s Day.  It’s called “Get Lucky” and it’s the largest 7K race around.  There’s also a 21K but with snowboarding I’m not trained up for that distance this early in the season.  It’s at 9am.  It’s insane.  There are serious runners.  There are serious runners like me that are turtles.  There are walkers.  There are people carrying beer as they run.  It’s huge…like 13,000 people huge so you get a little bit of everything!  There are a number of Irish bars along the route and particularly at the end.  And there’s this one that always has the door open and blares music out its old juke box to encourage us to run on…on to the end…on to the bar….where many will stay until they close the bar.

Personally I’ve never closed a bar.  I’ve stayed late at friends’ houses enjoying a beverage or several but never at a bar.  I wonder if it’s because I’m frugal…or more comfortable in a smaller group?  Or just never really had the opportunity?  Huh….

Actually the first time I ever had a beer after a race with my awesome blogging bestie Snarkfest when we ran the Marine Corp Half Marathon nearly two years ago.  I haven’t had a beer after a race since…I think I’m saving it for the special occasions I get to run with her…so NEXT MAY!?!?!?

Anyway – hope you have a spectacular weekend.  The weather is crazy weird here in western Wisconsin and we had a near record high yesterday…and that means nearly 70.  In March.  Our typical snowiest month.  I’ll take it.  (I’d rather be snowboarding – but at least this way when I run I won’t fall into any snow and ice covered ditches!)

AND!!!!  I am honor to be included in a soon to be released Anthology.  “Surviving Mental Illness Through Humor” or “SMITH.”  Check my Facebook page for release info : www.facebook.com/eviljoyspeaks.

Now…Go read some more awesomeness…..

EJ out – to get my roots to match the rest of my not gray hairs.

Deep Thoughts from a 38 Year Old

Today is my last day being 38.  I am feeling reflective and am therefore pondering many things.  One of which is why do the crappy things that happen sometimes stick in your head and seemingly overwrite the awesome things?  I’m not talking about major life events.  I’m talking about the little things – the guy who cut you off or the icy bridge that slowed you down.

What is the human condition that allows the 4 people who treated me poorly while at work to overshadow the 496 who complimented me?  Why should the one who told me in such a sweet manner my name was very fitting and I added “joy” to her day not be the FIRST thing I think about?

Writing it down does help.  I’m making a conscious decision to not write down the events of the less than positive interactions.  Believe me, I can recall the details very vividly.  Instead I’m choosing to remember the sweet kids who when they gave me their zip code I exclaimed, “HEY!  I grew up there!!!  There’s only one zip code for that area!!” and we had a good time talking about the local hangouts for a minute or two.  Or the sweet littles that come in and tell me all about their first time on the hill and how they love their new mittens.  Those are the interactions that need to occupy space in my brain.  When the other interactions, the mean ones, creep into my thoughts I want to shake myself and remind myself to focus on the positive.  To “be Teflon” as my therapist says.  Let the bad stuff roll right off.  When I accomplish the feat of focusing on the positive I know I have accomplished something,  Something good for me.  Something beneficial to my health.

In the now immortal words of Taylor Swift I pledge to “Shake it Off.”  I will let the haters hate and be Teflon and “Shake it off.”  I want to spend 39 loving life and focusing on the good.  On the fun.  Live a little more fully and maybe even break a few rules..  (That may be pushing the envelop a little…..)  I will say “Thank you!” to compliments and NOT shake those off.  I will treat myself in healthy ways and have more fun.

I plan to accomplish some of this today – while still 38.  I’m going to work today and treat myself with riding (snowboarding) tonight.  I’m going to enjoy the day and make the best of it.

What are you going to do to make today awesome?

You can watch the anthem of my Littles right here —> Taylor Swift – Shake It Off

Christmas is less than two weeks away!  I don’t care if any one bah humbugs me or not.  I love Christmas.  This year I’m finding a little more of the excitement and joy (pardon the pun) in the season.   The last few years have been a little flat for me but this year I feel more and more like myself!

The weekend before Thanksgiving I got out my Christmas decor.  I know…I’m one of those people….but at least let me explain the reason behind my ridiculous jolly behavior.  I have TWENTY totes.  Twenty red totes with green lids.  Not to be confused with the three black totes with orange lids or the pastel totes with grey lids.  Or the green tote with a white lid.  (I think I have a problem…..  Actually I grew up in a house that flooded twice so everything we own that is ‘stored’ is in a plastic tote “just in case.”  If our house floods, the city below has completely washed away!)  It takes copious amounts of time to get all the decorations out, the normal decor put away, the Christmas decorations displayed properly, and all those mother loving totes carried back downstairs.  It takes two days usually.  Because…I’m me.

So the Saturday before Thanksgiving dawns and I head off to my new part time job at the ski hill.  I come home and start nicely asking the spawn to carry up my totes.  We take over the kitchen table.  Each figurine or other item has so many memories attached to it and we talk through many of them.  Then we get to work because otherwise there’s no kitchen table…or counter…or island to eat dinner on.  I have Santas made of wood, ceramic Santas, even one croqueted out of lace.

I come across so many wonderful things.  Inevitably with all the little hands helping, something requires superglue.  But that is fun in and of itself.  Dr. Evil will put out the super glue, the standard glue, or the epoxy depending on the situation.

Then…the cookbooks.  I start my baking early.  I know which cookies and bars/squares (what do you call them – I found many things have odd names in this part of the country – a hot dish is a casserole not a heating plate as I found out at my first work party!) may be frozen happily for a month and which need to be consumed more quickly.  The Littles help me cook.  We start with massive hand washing, adorning of the aprons in the appropriate sizes, and then….pinches of spices, flours, sugars, and everything in between start a-flying.

Dr. Evil is a great sport during all of this.  Every year I say I’ll get it done in one day.  He just smiles and shakes his head knowing it will be a full two days before our house looks not like a war zone but festive and happy.  He definitely subscribes to the mantra of “When in Rome…” living with me.  He’s a good cookie.

Remembering My Youth

Here’s a question for you.  If you could be any age again for a week what age would you choose?

And you have to go back.  Thinking about the future is for another post.

So many choices!

Do I go back to when I was 4 and all of my siblings still lived at home and we a dog named Penny?  I don’t remember a lot of that time period except we had a lot of people in the house (my siblings and parents) and I got to go to work with my mom and roller skate in the hallways while she worked.

Do I go back to kindergarten on the very first day? I met my best friend that day.  She still is my best friend.

How about in 3rd grade when I got to fly to see my other best friend after she moved away?  My mom had her first flight as I had my first flight.  That was quite the week!

What about 5th grade when I stood up for myself for the very first time?  I clearly remember telling someone “I’m not fat, you’re being mean!”  From that day on, I felt empowered!

How about the middle school dance where my boyfriend took the whole “Sadie Hawkins” thing to a new level and when I arrived to pick him up (with my sister driving us) he had on more makeup that I did!  And a dress.  And earrings.  And heels.  And PANTYHOSE!

What about high school?  So much emotion and drama.  So many new experiences.  And I met Dr. Evil at band camp.  Yes…this one time…at Band Camp….I met my future husband.  I’m like American Pie and Megan Trainor all rolled into one.

What about the week when at 18 I moved to college in Rolla, Missouri?  Band camp, instant family, applied mathematics.

How about when we got married?  Still in college just 20 years old.  All the drama and excitement of that week.  Dr. Evil’s roommate wrecked his car the week before our wedding so we had even more excitement.  All the dresses, the tuxedos (they were lost for a day – all of them!), the family and friends.  The photos, the cake, our vows.

How about the day we moved from Rolla, Missouri to St. Paul, Minnesota?  Our first anniversary!  December 28, 1997.  It was FREAKING COLD!  But we got to stay in a nice hotel and eat at some fancy-schmancy restaurants courtesy of his new company.  Pretty cool digs for a 21 year old!

What about the day I started my new job?  I graduated in December and started my first real job in January.  After being up here for a year.  It was very intense.  But pretty cool.

But wait!  What about when we moved into the house we had built four months later?  That was super exciting!  All of my marching band friends helped up move!  The computer chair ride down the hill that ended in a crash.  Sleeping in the living room because they installed the wrong carpet in our bedroom.  Trying to light the pilot light on a gas stove with a match because we didn’t know how to use gas appliances.

Oh…but oh.  The excitement and pure joy followed by extreme terror of finding out I was pregnant.  I was just 23.  Married for 3 years, with a job, in a new house, and now…expecting a baby.  And oh so sick.  I loved every minute of it.

But the week I found I was pregnant with my second was pretty amazing too.  I’d experience that week all over again!

What about when we decided to take a leap of faith and move to Wisconsin, just across the boarder.  That was an exciting week – we found this house – our home.  The first day.  We found it and we looked no further.  We moved in and have made it ours.  The move was pretty exciting!  But honestly I don’t know if I’m up for that week.  We lost a baby that week.  I was newly pregnant and had a miscarriage.  I think I’ll skip that week.

How about when Eldest started kindergarten?  That was an amazing week.  We had a newborn in the house, a big 5 year and a little crazy 2 year old!  And amazing friends.  So much to do and see and I was really finding my feet here in Hudson.  That would be fun…..

But wait!!   2007 was pretty cool!  We had another baby, lots of family near by and lots of family from far able to visit a lot.  There are several weeks of that year I’d relive in a heartbeat.

I’ll kindly skip a few of the months in 2011 and 2012.

How about when I started blogging and met Snarkfest?  That was flipping cool.  And still is.  Or the week I got to fly out and meet her?  Or when my favorite stalker (met through Snarkfest) flew out here to hang with me?

But from what I’m writing here, I’m realizing I want to live today and enjoy the memories of all the past weeks in my life.  Why re-experience only one week from my past when I can cherish the memories of each and continue to make the most of today?

What about you?  Is there that one moment in time you’d love to relive?  Tell me!!

A HUGE shout out to Silence of the Mom for giving me this awesome prompt!  I am so glad to walk down memory lane recalling things I hadn’t thought of in years.

Music…and more Music

It’s been the week from hell.  I’ll go into that another day.

I was driving home from Iowa.  It’s about a 5 hour drive and I’m extremely familiar with the route so I really get into what I choose to listen to on the radio, Spotify, whatever….

Normally I jam to Indigo Girls if I’m tired.  I know all the words to ALL the songs and I adore their music.  I might throw in some Rusted Root, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, or Enya with that grouping of artists.  (A little eclectic I know…)

If I’m feeling the groove and decide I want the windows down and the music loud while driving back roads across Iowa  – COUNTRY it is.  Bring it on.  I admit I’m more a fan of the recent “country” music than the classics, but I enjoy those too.

If the rain is coming down and I’m just getting through, the Top 40 helps me cover the miles.  Music from the past two years to current hits will be blaring.

And if I’m just driving without a care in the world, I listen to comedians.  I love comedy and my secret dream is be to become a successful stand up comedian.

Never been a huge fan of rap or heavy metal.  So imagine my surprise while driving yesterday when all I wanted to listen to was rap.  I heard about this Iraqi-American rapper on NPR and had to seek out more rap to hear.   For over 2 hours of the drive I listened and tried to hear the message behind the lyrics.

Then the heavy metal hit and I made it to Red Wing, Minnesota!  I had covered many miles listening to Metallica, Def Leppard (my jam when I was in 6th grade!), and Van Halen.

I was pleasantly surprised by my sudden interest in music genres that I previously couldn’t stand.  When I was a DJ in college, I played the same genre every show by choice!  Too bad I wasn’t more open to new things back then!!!

However I was so very dismayed to find the love of my norm music diminished!?!

Then I came to my excellent senses and realized….

If I know the words to songs more than 20 years old by heart, there is room for all the new music in my heart too!   I don’t have to replace, only add!!!  It’s like I bought more memory for my brain.

Secret Subject Swap

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week, 14 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

My prompt: Imagine you wake up one morning and find that your current taste in music is its exact opposite. Your love of music has not quantifiably changed at all, but what you used to love you now hate and vice versa. This, for most people, would be understandably upsetting. Would it be for you? Why or why not?

School's Out For Summer!

Summer has arrived.

“You know Mom summer doesn’t actually start until the equinox so it’s really still spring.”

Screen Shot 2014-04-17 at 7.54.10 AM

More accurately – as is evidently required, school has ended for the 2013-2014 school year in this lair.  Now…there are four spawn home.  All day.  Every day.  All summer long.

I.  Am.  Terrified.

Being the brilliant parents Dr. Evil and I are, we have the two oldest scheduled for loads of physical activity in the morning hours.  Raider Elite is an organized summer workout/gym class.  And again my brilliance shines through. It begins at 8:30 or 9 depending on grade level.  (And hell no, I am not making two trips – you’d best bring a book to read or something because you’re sitting on your arse at school while waiting for your class to start.)

And…Then…..For Eldest….He was selected from the lottery for summer gym for high school.  Oh…that pains me to write.  My oldest is in high school.  He can’t be that big.  I can’t be that old.  I’m not yet vintage.  Unless vintage is cool.  Then maybe, just maybe I can be the start of vintage.  Like the gray in my hair.  I have the start of gray.  It’s not yet to the point where I take my ink pen and try to hide the blue gray hairs.

Back to summer….

After 3 hours of physical activity they get to come home.

And do chores.

Then…it’s time for baseball, softball, or t-ball depending on their age.

My goal?  To make them sleep at night.  So they don’t hear the frogs out in the back acres.  So they don’t hear the alarm bell Dr. Evil has go off at 5:14 am EVERY FREAKING DAY.  And to keep them so active they are ready for whatever comes their way in the fall.  One is playing football.  One is thinking about cross country.  The other two, my Littles, are just little enough that riding bike, swimming, trampoline jumping, playing tag, running from their older siblings, and doing chores will make them tired.  And ready for the activities that come with grades 1 and 4.

I hope.

And….I hope we spend time at the beach.  Together.  All of us.  There is a man made ‘lake’ beach area in a nearby state park.  You can bring in coolers of food and drinks and we can spend the entire day (except for the hours of required hard physical labor for the two Bigs) playing in the water, on the play structure (which is EPIC – honestly – it’s amazing and I LOVE IT), or just hanging on the beach soaking up the sun that makes it past my broad spectrum 50 SPF water proof, bug proof, sweat proof, have to scrub off but keeps my Littlest from turning into a lobster and makes me worry about skin cancer … sunblock.   We’ll take some RV trips.  One in particular is to a ball tournament at Wisconsin Dells.  The others…well Dr. Evil is good at planning those and tends to just let me know when to have things ready to roll.

And I’m good with that.

Summer has arrived.  I’m a little less terrified.

And ready to live it up.

What are you plans for the summer?

EJ out – to get ready for this first day – I have a chore list to make!!  Woot Woot!

If you’re feeling the joy summer brings (see what I did there????), take a minute and click on that juggling lady there up on the right.  You’ll cast a vote for my blog at Top Mommy Blogs.  That’s all you have to do.  One click here on this blog page.  Thanks!!!  Now….

I would buy you a house”

I had this dream last week about money.  Those that know me in real life know money is a thing for me – I worry about never having enough – and sometimes if seems as if we don’t and payday can’t come soon enough.  Winning the lottery would be amazing.   I’m so frugal that the first thing I’d do is line up all of my bills and start paying them off.  Then I’d create college accounts for the spawn.  (Maybe do those in the opposite order.)  I’d ensure there was enough for the spawn to go to a reasonable college, probably a state school, and then I’d save a chunk for retirement.  I figure that takes about $500,000 of the $1,000,000.  Based on my frugal nature, the spawn’s college fund would be smartly invested so the entire amount wouldn’t have to be present until they reach college age.

Then…….I’d have to make a list.  Of needs, wants, should do’s, and will do’s.  It’s a tricky thing.  I would want to pay off all my family’s bills.  But at the same time, I’d want to help out those less fortunate.  But at the same time, I want to support our schools.  And our troops.  And the Boy Scouts.  And the Girl Scouts.  And 4-H.  And Caring Bridge.  And those who need it way more than I ever would or could.

In my dream I was cognizant enough of my own nature of indecision that I only gave myself 24 hours to decide what to spend this $1,000,000 lottery winning on.  I came up with a list.  And I decided to fill in the amounts as the spirit moved me.  Here goes :

  • Bills
  • College funds
  • Retirement
  • Medical Fund for those who need it – need help with mortgage payment or groceries or hotels or whatever
  • Cancer Research
  • Music Programs in schools
  • Schools
  • Art Programs in schools
  • Kid Clubs
  • Food Shelf
  • Church
  • My Own Small Business
  • and…we’d have to have a little fun – maybe new car for Dr. Evil, some new furniture for the house and maybe Disney for the spawn.

So I would make quick work of $1,000,000.  But I would feel good in doing so!!!  And I’m pretty confident I could make all that happen in 24 hours.  So I am an overachiever even in my dreams!  Bwawahahahahaha!

What would you do with $1,000,000 in 24 hours or less?  Use it, enjoy it, blow it, or a bit of all three?

Secret Subject Swap

Double Dip…Stigma Fighters and Use Your Words

Today I’m double dipping.  I’ve got a post up that is important to me.

Not knowing exactly when it was going up ….. I also committed to Use Your Words.

Screen Shot 2014-01-16 at 8.23.16 PM

So today…I’m integrating these two.

You’re going to find highlights (and low points) of my ‘story’ today on a post at Old School/New School Mom in a series she has called Stigma Fighters.  I realize I’m sharing a very intimate part of my life with complete strangers. But that’s what fighting stigma is about.

When you deal with mental health issues, if feels as though your mind is broken.  And there is stigma associated with admitting there’s a problem.  It doesn’t make you a weak person.  It doesn’t make you a loser.  In fact, when you seek help it shows the world just how strong you can be.  And maybe, just maybe, you’ll give another the courage to do the same.  It could mean the difference between life and death.

You deal with your health issues when they seem simple – like a cold or a sprained ankle.  Why should keeping your mind healthy be any different?  Realizing you need help is hard.  I didn’t see it when I was in the thick of the worst.  It took Dr. Evil telling me something was wrong after I had my second child and a minor car accident.  My reaction was over the top.  Way over the top.

But I sought help.  And over the years I’ve learned to follow my instincts when I sense I’m not on a good path.   And I’ve learned to deal with many of the issues that cause me to trigger.

At the end of the day….I’m a happy, healthy person.  And I can say that now because I’m dealing with my demons.  I have issues, but who doesn’t?

And now….I’m working to break the stigma.   Check out the post over at Old School/New School Mom.

Until now.

I’m using:               Highlights, complete stranger, mind, and follow your instincts

They were submitted by:          Confessions of a part-time working mom

YOU MUST READ her blog!  And all of the others!  I have SPOKEN.  And I’m the all powerful EVIL JOY.  Do as I command….or I’ll go EVIL ON YOUR ARSE.

(I had to throw that in….I’m normally sort of a cheeky blogger who is more humorous than serious…..don’t want people to miss that side of me!!!)

I Have Spoken…Thus It Shall Be.

Yesterday something happened in my world that rocked me.  And that event will be discussed in another blog post.  But it got me thinking. Why does bad stuff happen?  Why aren’t laws created to keep all safe and uphold values to which each of us could subscribe?  Is the system flawed?  Are we flawed?

As humans, we must value each other.  I believe in many things and those beliefs set me apart from others on more occasions than I’d care to admit.  I am in NO way saying I’m right or wrong, just often I find myself on the opposite side of ‘the’ issue than those surrounding me.  Sometimes, I admit, I take the opposite side just to see if I can see the issue from a different point of view.  I’m a HUGE advocate of ‘agree to disagree.’  For instance I often ask my friends of different religious beliefs to explain why and how their belief system works.  Not in order to be converted and certainly not to judge.

But to understand.

While I try hard to hold to my belief that good exists in all people, I often fail when faced with evils.  And by evils I mean events and the people behind the events that rob another of their right to happiness.  Somewhere there is someone who loves the person who did wrong.  Right?  I often ask myself, “What if that criminal or offender were my child?  Wouldn’t I love them, evil and all?”  Many times I’m left with a question in my mind of what line would have to be crossed for that conviction to be false?

Given the opportunity to create a law, what would that law be?  And what would be the reward for upholding said law?  And the punishment for breaking it?

Keeping in mind my given name is Joy….If I could create a law…

The Golden Rule.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The reward for upholding the law is the intrinsic value of having done the right thing.

The punishment….I don’t know.  I simply can’t answer that question.

If one were to follow the Golden Rule then it is clear.  If you steal, something is taken from you.  But then the person passing judgement on you is judging.  Therefore that individual must be judged.  It’s like a mobius strip of events.  Where does it stop and where does it start?

Screen Shot 2014-05-09 at 7.52.19 AM

I think it boils down to trying to follow the Golden Rule.  Be kind.  Do the right thing.  Be compassionate.  Remember you haven’t walked their path when you find yourself quick to judge.  Support each other rather than break each other down.

Just do it.  I have spoken.  Thus it shall be.

EJ out – to braid and blow-dry hair on spawn.  Golden Rule…does that mean someone else will do my hair?!?!?!?
