Time to Fly

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week 13 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

Climaxed submitted this awesome topic : Someone has come up with a potion (Harry Potter style) that will bring luck to anyone who drinks it. You’re offered a free test if you write about your day on your blog with the caveat that you wait for something pretty important going on–meaning the company doesn’t want you to take it and write about a regular but super lucky day at home. They’re really wanting you to test the boundaries of the potion and show your audience what it can do. What might you use yours for? Write about your luckiest day.

Here goes….

“Today’s the day!” I think as I pack up my gear for a day at the hill. I’m going to go and attack the jumps and features for the first time while snowboarding. Normally I’d just head over and ride, starring at the tow rope pulling people up to the top of the terrain park. Normally I’d watch on the lift, cranking my head around as far as I can, in awe of people in the park.

Today…I’m doing it. Because today…I get to try the “Potion.” Since I’m not allowed to enter politics or the medical field on this trial of the potion, I can’t find the solution for world peace or the cure for MS or cancer. I’m supposed to make a day extraordinary by pushing my boundaries within my own world. I decided if I can do these things I’ve dreamed of doing, have worked towards but not yet achieved, and succeed with this potion, there’s hope for making it happen without the potion too!

I’m a decent snowboarder. I can get out of most anything I get into….except that one time when my son had to rescue my laughing self when I got into too thick of trees. (He heard me “cackling” and found me, found us a route out, and marveled I had gotten that deep without hugging a tree!) It may not be pretty or perfect, but I love a good challenge and will take on moguls and steeps with a smile on my face and in my heart.

Boxes, features, and jumps….uummmm nope. I have done some boxes – at the speed of snail – going so slowly that I fall due to lack of forward motion not balance.  Jumps…I dream. I dream of finding that right combination of physics, fear, exhilaration, and skill.

Today I do. I’ve decided this is the test. My personal ultimate test of the “Potion.” Today will erase the memories of being stuck with a child on an icy hill, not visible from above, not able to get her to move, as people and their harsh words flew around us. Today will replace the days of doubt and make the mountains of bruises worth it. I will jump and feel like I’m flying. And it will be awesome.

I put the potion in my front pocket, ride the lift to the top, and get off. I am so terribly fearful of the lift – it’s really ridiculous. But I don’t want to waste the potion on something I should not fear and have conquered several times over. I strap in, drink the potion down, and take a test run.

Okay. This is okay. I can do this. I carve a little. And back to to the top we go.

Back up. To the top.

Time to fly.

And that was the end of it.

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week, 14 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

Secret Subject Swap

You know those stories we tell?  You know…the ones we tell over and over?  Wait, you don’t do that?  Only me?

Walk with me down retell story memory lane.

There’s the story about how Eldest picked Eldest Female Spawn’s name when she was just a day old.  Or the one about how Eldest clapped when driving past Perkins and excitedly shrieked, “Nummy Nummy Nummy!” (After that we stopped eating out so much.)  There’s the time I went to kindergarten, stood quietly outside the door, snapped one picture, and from then on was forbidden from ever coming to school to again embarrass him in front of his friends.

The story about the time I set of the hospital abduction alarm with my baby while going for my first walk after a c-section.  The one where we lost your Eldest Female Spawn at Disney.  Or that story where I sadly recall how I ran over my Fizzy Dog.  The story about how Dr. Evil and I ran a marathon together.  Or the one where I fell of a chair lift (at the bottom) to keep Littlest from falling off.

Do you ever say “and that was the end of it.”?

(After the chair lift story I did say that….)

I’m guilty of not letting things have an end.  I tend to rehash and relive moments well beyond their shelf life.  I’m known among my friends from childhood for remembering everything.  The most absurd, minuscule things.  Knowing my elephant like memory Dr. Evil often asks if some disagreement we’ve had will go on “the list.”  (No.)

So today, I resolve to let things have an end.

And that was the end of that.

See what I did there?

Thanks to Someone Else’s Genius for the prompt of “And that was the end of it.”

Now….this is not the end.  Go read the other amazing bloggers participating in the Secret Subject Swap this week.  Once you’ve read all of those…it’s still not the end.  You should read some of their other posts.  Because I feel like a miniature among giants.  These bloggers…well…they’re fabulous and I’m honored to be able to be included in this activity each time Karen organizes it.

EJ out – to go hem some Boy Scout pants needed tonight.  Gah.

Remembering My Youth

Here’s a question for you.  If you could be any age again for a week what age would you choose?

And you have to go back.  Thinking about the future is for another post.

So many choices!

Do I go back to when I was 4 and all of my siblings still lived at home and we a dog named Penny?  I don’t remember a lot of that time period except we had a lot of people in the house (my siblings and parents) and I got to go to work with my mom and roller skate in the hallways while she worked.

Do I go back to kindergarten on the very first day? I met my best friend that day.  She still is my best friend.

How about in 3rd grade when I got to fly to see my other best friend after she moved away?  My mom had her first flight as I had my first flight.  That was quite the week!

What about 5th grade when I stood up for myself for the very first time?  I clearly remember telling someone “I’m not fat, you’re being mean!”  From that day on, I felt empowered!

How about the middle school dance where my boyfriend took the whole “Sadie Hawkins” thing to a new level and when I arrived to pick him up (with my sister driving us) he had on more makeup that I did!  And a dress.  And earrings.  And heels.  And PANTYHOSE!

What about high school?  So much emotion and drama.  So many new experiences.  And I met Dr. Evil at band camp.  Yes…this one time…at Band Camp….I met my future husband.  I’m like American Pie and Megan Trainor all rolled into one.

What about the week when at 18 I moved to college in Rolla, Missouri?  Band camp, instant family, applied mathematics.

How about when we got married?  Still in college just 20 years old.  All the drama and excitement of that week.  Dr. Evil’s roommate wrecked his car the week before our wedding so we had even more excitement.  All the dresses, the tuxedos (they were lost for a day – all of them!), the family and friends.  The photos, the cake, our vows.

How about the day we moved from Rolla, Missouri to St. Paul, Minnesota?  Our first anniversary!  December 28, 1997.  It was FREAKING COLD!  But we got to stay in a nice hotel and eat at some fancy-schmancy restaurants courtesy of his new company.  Pretty cool digs for a 21 year old!

What about the day I started my new job?  I graduated in December and started my first real job in January.  After being up here for a year.  It was very intense.  But pretty cool.

But wait!  What about when we moved into the house we had built four months later?  That was super exciting!  All of my marching band friends helped up move!  The computer chair ride down the hill that ended in a crash.  Sleeping in the living room because they installed the wrong carpet in our bedroom.  Trying to light the pilot light on a gas stove with a match because we didn’t know how to use gas appliances.

Oh…but oh.  The excitement and pure joy followed by extreme terror of finding out I was pregnant.  I was just 23.  Married for 3 years, with a job, in a new house, and now…expecting a baby.  And oh so sick.  I loved every minute of it.

But the week I found I was pregnant with my second was pretty amazing too.  I’d experience that week all over again!

What about when we decided to take a leap of faith and move to Wisconsin, just across the boarder.  That was an exciting week – we found this house – our home.  The first day.  We found it and we looked no further.  We moved in and have made it ours.  The move was pretty exciting!  But honestly I don’t know if I’m up for that week.  We lost a baby that week.  I was newly pregnant and had a miscarriage.  I think I’ll skip that week.

How about when Eldest started kindergarten?  That was an amazing week.  We had a newborn in the house, a big 5 year and a little crazy 2 year old!  And amazing friends.  So much to do and see and I was really finding my feet here in Hudson.  That would be fun…..

But wait!!   2007 was pretty cool!  We had another baby, lots of family near by and lots of family from far able to visit a lot.  There are several weeks of that year I’d relive in a heartbeat.

I’ll kindly skip a few of the months in 2011 and 2012.

How about when I started blogging and met Snarkfest?  That was flipping cool.  And still is.  Or the week I got to fly out and meet her?  Or when my favorite stalker (met through Snarkfest) flew out here to hang with me?

But from what I’m writing here, I’m realizing I want to live today and enjoy the memories of all the past weeks in my life.  Why re-experience only one week from my past when I can cherish the memories of each and continue to make the most of today?

What about you?  Is there that one moment in time you’d love to relive?  Tell me!!

A HUGE shout out to Silence of the Mom for giving me this awesome prompt!  I am so glad to walk down memory lane recalling things I hadn’t thought of in years.

Fear No More

As I sit surrounded by the sounds of laughter and heart warming chatter of a quaint coffee shop I can write about a fear. A fear I don’t have to face anymore.

IMG_4380.JPG

I used to be afraid of thinking about what my life would be if something happened to my husband or children.

I’ve faced that fear. Not by choice. And you know what? I came out the other side.

Almost three years ago Dr. Evil got sick. Really sick. Life support sick. Almost died sick.

It sucked. I don’t have words to describe the experience although I’ve tried. Many times.

Life threw us a curve ball most fear and no one expects.

But we came out the other side. Wiser. Thankful. More aware of mortality. Less focused on the silly things. Point is ….. we came out the other side.

I’ve made some absolutely amazing friends. I’ve folded many people into my “family.” Family is thicker than simply blood. And I’ve grown as a person. I strive to be better.

I no longer worry incessantly about the wellbeing of my children. Instead I work at being a better parent. A better partner. A better person. To be more. While learning to just ….. be. Those statements may seem in direct conflict with each other. But one thing overcoming my fear taught me was I must focus some on myself in order to be more. To be a better wife and parent.

As fall approaches I am nervous. I think I may always be but only time will tell. November and December are tough months for me.

But they are also months filled with miracles. Dr. Evil got sick BUT HE ALSO GOT BETTER during these months too. (And many of the following months too!)

It’s taken me a few years to deal with my fear. I do still worry. What parent or spouse doesn’t? But fear no longer dictates my every thought, every breath.

I just try to live for today and make the most of it.

EJ out – to love this Friday with snow forecasted!!! SNOWBOARDING SOON!!! 🏂🏂🏂🏂🏂🏂🏂🏂🏂🏂

Thanks to Small Talk Mama for this awesome subject. I only did one fear but it was a doozie so I hope that’s okay!!!!

Music…and more Music

It’s been the week from hell.  I’ll go into that another day.

I was driving home from Iowa.  It’s about a 5 hour drive and I’m extremely familiar with the route so I really get into what I choose to listen to on the radio, Spotify, whatever….

Normally I jam to Indigo Girls if I’m tired.  I know all the words to ALL the songs and I adore their music.  I might throw in some Rusted Root, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, or Enya with that grouping of artists.  (A little eclectic I know…)

If I’m feeling the groove and decide I want the windows down and the music loud while driving back roads across Iowa  – COUNTRY it is.  Bring it on.  I admit I’m more a fan of the recent “country” music than the classics, but I enjoy those too.

If the rain is coming down and I’m just getting through, the Top 40 helps me cover the miles.  Music from the past two years to current hits will be blaring.

And if I’m just driving without a care in the world, I listen to comedians.  I love comedy and my secret dream is be to become a successful stand up comedian.

Never been a huge fan of rap or heavy metal.  So imagine my surprise while driving yesterday when all I wanted to listen to was rap.  I heard about this Iraqi-American rapper on NPR and had to seek out more rap to hear.   For over 2 hours of the drive I listened and tried to hear the message behind the lyrics.

Then the heavy metal hit and I made it to Red Wing, Minnesota!  I had covered many miles listening to Metallica, Def Leppard (my jam when I was in 6th grade!), and Van Halen.

I was pleasantly surprised by my sudden interest in music genres that I previously couldn’t stand.  When I was a DJ in college, I played the same genre every show by choice!  Too bad I wasn’t more open to new things back then!!!

However I was so very dismayed to find the love of my norm music diminished!?!

Then I came to my excellent senses and realized….

If I know the words to songs more than 20 years old by heart, there is room for all the new music in my heart too!   I don’t have to replace, only add!!!  It’s like I bought more memory for my brain.

My prompt: Imagine you wake up one morning and find that your current taste in music is its exact opposite. Your love of music has not quantifiably changed at all, but what you used to love you now hate and vice versa. This, for most people, would be understandably upsetting. Would it be for you? Why or why not?

If I had a million dollars….

“If I had a million dollars
If I had a million dollars
Well, I’d buy you a house
I would buy you a house”

Read more: Barenaked Ladies – If I Had A Million Dollars Lyrics | MetroLyrics

I had this dream last week about money.  Those that know me in real life know money is a thing for me – I worry about never having enough – and sometimes if seems as if we don’t and payday can’t come soon enough.  Winning the lottery would be amazing.   I’m so frugal that the first thing I’d do is line up all of my bills and start paying them off.  Then I’d create college accounts for the spawn.  (Maybe do those in the opposite order.)  I’d ensure there was enough for the spawn to go to a reasonable college, probably a state school, and then I’d save a chunk for retirement.  I figure that takes about $500,000 of the $1,000,000.  Based on my frugal nature, the spawn’s college fund would be smartly invested so the entire amount wouldn’t have to be present until they reach college age.

Then…….I’d have to make a list.  Of needs, wants, should do’s, and will do’s.  It’s a tricky thing.  I would want to pay off all my family’s bills.  But at the same time, I’d want to help out those less fortunate.  But at the same time, I want to support our schools.  And our troops.  And the Boy Scouts.  And the Girl Scouts.  And 4-H.  And Caring Bridge.  And those who need it way more than I ever would or could.

In my dream I was cognizant enough of my own nature of indecision that I only gave myself 24 hours to decide what to spend this $1,000,000 lottery winning on.  I came up with a list.  And I decided to fill in the amounts as the spirit moved me.  Here goes :

  • Bills
  • College funds
  • Retirement
  • Medical Fund for those who need it – need help with mortgage payment or groceries or hotels or whatever
  • Cancer Research
  • Music Programs in schools
  • Schools
  • Art Programs in schools
  • Kid Clubs
  • Food Shelf
  • Church
  • My Own Small Business
  • and…we’d have to have a little fun – maybe new car for Dr. Evil, some new furniture for the house and maybe Disney for the spawn.

So I would make quick work of $1,000,000.  But I would feel good in doing so!!!  And I’m pretty confident I could make all that happen in 24 hours.  So I am an overachiever even in my dreams!  Bwawahahahahaha!

What would you do with $1,000,000 in 24 hours or less?  Use it, enjoy it, blow it, or a bit of all three?

I Have Spoken…Thus It Shall Be.

Yesterday something happened in my world that rocked me.  And that event will be discussed in another blog post.  But it got me thinking. Why does bad stuff happen?  Why aren’t laws created to keep all safe and uphold values to which each of us could subscribe?  Is the system flawed?  Are we flawed?

As humans, we must value each other.  I believe in many things and those beliefs set me apart from others on more occasions than I’d care to admit.  I am in NO way saying I’m right or wrong, just often I find myself on the opposite side of ‘the’ issue than those surrounding me.  Sometimes, I admit, I take the opposite side just to see if I can see the issue from a different point of view.  I’m a HUGE advocate of ‘agree to disagree.’  For instance I often ask my friends of different religious beliefs to explain why and how their belief system works.  Not in order to be converted and certainly not to judge.

But to understand.

While I try hard to hold to my belief that good exists in all people, I often fail when faced with evils.  And by evils I mean events and the people behind the events that rob another of their right to happiness.  Somewhere there is someone who loves the person who did wrong.  Right?  I often ask myself, “What if that criminal or offender were my child?  Wouldn’t I love them, evil and all?”  Many times I’m left with a question in my mind of what line would have to be crossed for that conviction to be false?

Given the opportunity to create a law, what would that law be?  And what would be the reward for upholding said law?  And the punishment for breaking it?

Keeping in mind my given name is Joy….If I could create a law…

The Golden Rule.

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

The reward for upholding the law is the intrinsic value of having done the right thing.

The punishment….I don’t know.  I simply can’t answer that question.

If one were to follow the Golden Rule then it is clear.  If you steal, something is taken from you.  But then the person passing judgement on you is judging.  Therefore that individual must be judged.  It’s like a mobius strip of events.  Where does it stop and where does it start?

Screen Shot 2014-05-09 at 7.52.19 AM

I think it boils down to trying to follow the Golden Rule.  Be kind.  Do the right thing.  Be compassionate.  Remember you haven’t walked their path when you find yourself quick to judge.  Support each other rather than break each other down.

Just do it.  I have spoken.  Thus it shall be.

EJ out – to braid and blow-dry hair on spawn.  Golden Rule…does that mean someone else will do my hair?!?!?!?

A Different Time….

The snow today has transported my mind to a different place and time.

Like December.  In Wisconsin.

Okay so it’s not a different place.  But it’s certainly isn’t the April I was expecting.

The pretty snowfall has me thinking.  Would I rather live in Middle Earth, Narnia, or Hogwarts?

Let’s attack this methodically.

Middle Earth sort of scares the crap out of me.  Aren’t there gremlins and monsters, volcanos and tidal waves, evil and insanity galore?  So no.  Just no.

Narnia is pretty cool.  Talking animals.  But that crazy Ice Queen lady?  She scares the bejeebers out of me.  Like nightmare inducing horror that scares me.  I would love to be transported through a wardrobe but the random subway car taking me away.  That’s sort of freaky as hell.  No thank you.

So then Hogwarts.  Hogwarts has it’s share of scary.  But if I were there I would have powers, right?  Since this is my imagination….Hell yes I have powers.  I am an awesome wizard.  There may be danger and corruption around every corner but seeing how I’m this awesome wizard, I’m set, right?

First, I will practice and hone my skills.  I will be the best.  I will take on that nasty evil snake thing and defeat the snot out of it.  I will save the day.  With my awesome powers.  And there, at Hogwarts, I’m one heck of a snowboarding too.  And a good marathoner.  (If I have powers, I may as well use them for good…my good.)

I am the …

Female.Harry.Potter.

I will be like Hermione only better.  I’ll be Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger all rolled into one.  Without the teenage angst and bratty behavior.

I am…..

AWESOME!

(Now for an ear worm.  Everything is Awesome.  Everything is cool when you’re part of a team.  Everything is Awesome!)

Today’s Awesome post is part of a Secret Subject Swap. This week, 14 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.

My question was : Middle Earth, Narnia, or Hogwarts and was submitted by the Amazing Stacy from Stacy Sews and Schools.

Evil Ninja Joy

I love my home.  We’ve been here nearly 10 years.  Parts of it are still sporting the builder’s paint as it was the spec home for the neighborhood.  Dr. Evil and I searched this town for houses for exactly one day.  One day.  We found this house and stopped looking.  And not because we couldn’t look any longer.  It was exactly what we wanted.  A touch of land, about three acres, not a split entry, and a master bathroom.  Dr. Evil loved the kitchen and that’s his deal so I was happy.

The four of us moved in and started making this building our home.  We grew to six.  And two dogs.  And four rats.

And now….the mud room.  Which incidentally is also the laundry room.  Which is a disaster area.  All the time.

As my Female Spawn have a thing for shoes (which by the way, my crazy feet are totally jealous of – I own about three pairs of shoes), Eldest Spawn is sporting a size 11 mens and Dr. Evil has about three pairs of work shoes in rotation, there is a plethora of shoes all over the place.  And winter.  So now add in 4 pairs of snow boots, 6 pairs of snow boarding boots, double sets of clothing for each spawn (like hell they are wearing their snowboarding gear to school, that shit is expensive!), multiple pairs of mitts for each and oh yeah…all of our laundry.

This room is a pit.

One Friday night I was frustrated with the lack of organization in our lair.  See this post to learn how nuts I really am.  I told Dr. Evil I was to be left alone and was going to redo the laundry room yet again.  I was taking the closet apart.  I was adding bins and hooks on the inside to make it more functional.  Thanks Pinterest for making me forgot I’m not handy and this closet is tiny and not room sized.

Dr. Evil said, “Ya know, we keep talking about taking that closet out.  Let’s make a ‘no return’ move.”  And then…..

……………This happened.

And then this happened.

And now….I’m have this…..

I want to snap my fingers and make it all better.   And not spend any money (yeah right.)  Initially we planned on doing all the work ourselves.  And then we remembered we don’t know anything about construction or what the hell we’d be doing so we decided to call on our friend who in fact is a construction genius.  We are figuring out what we want to so we can ask him for a bid.

So for now I’m stuck with a mini-mess.  Hopefully soon we will know what we want and be able to start on the work.  I’m all for doing the stuff I’m good at – painting, making sandwiches for those doing more than painting, giving my opinion, cleaning up…..but I’m excited for all the stuff I can’t do to begin!

(Think we’re impulsive much?!)

EJ out – to sweep up more drywall dust.

Help a construction impaired Evil Joy out and click on the Top Mommy Blogs icon up there on the right.  Doing so casts a vote for me in the Humor Section of Top Mommy Blogs.  I’m clawing my way back up into the Top 25!

Secret Subject Swap – Don't Mess With Me!

Welcome to a Secret Subject Swap. This week, 12 brave bloggers picked a secret subject for someone else and were assigned a secret subject to interpret in their own style. Today we are all simultaneously divulging our topics and submitting our posts.  (And kudos to Karen – thankful she takes to the time to have the swap!!!)

Secret Subject Swap

My topic is the brain baby of A Working Mom’s “Whoas” and I love it.  LOVE IT!  Here goes….

Littlest was playing at the park.  She jumped off a swing and landed…sort of.  And then fell on her bum.  Luckily for her the snow piled was soft so she giggled.  She hopped up.  Her mad skills caught the eye of a slightly older child.  He walked over.  As Christmas just passed, presents were all the talk of the playground.

Littlest started to head for the swing again but ‘the boy’ got there first.  She waited her turn and he jumped off and landed with grace and style.  And a funny noise!

Littlest exclaimed, “Hey!!  That’s the sound my Furby makes when you shake it!  Santa brought me and my sisters each one.  They talk to each other!!”

To which “the boy” replied, “You know, my older sister told me there’s no Santa and I totally believe her because she told me exactly where Mom and Dad hid the gifts and I went snooping.”

Littlest’s smile faltered.  Her eyes became downcast.  “He couldn’t be right could he?” she thought?  Her eyes ‘got water in them’ as she says when she’s trying to hide she’s crying.

Then a warm thought wrapped her heart in happiness.  Her eyes dried up and her smile returned to full watt force.

“Nope.  You’re wrong.  We watched Polar Express and you’re just one of those people who can’t hear the bell.  That’s sad.  I hope you can hear the bell again  because Christmas is way more fun for kids!  Want another turn on the swing?”

Now it was his turn.  He couldn’t get her words out of his cute little 7-year-old head.  Maybe just maybe his sister was picking on him?  Because she likes to do that.  And she didn’t get as many presents as he did.  Maybe…maybe he’d have to believe again.

(GO LITTLEST!  BRING ONE MORE FOR THE PRO-SANTA TEAM!!!)

My prompt was : If someone told your kid Santa didn’t exist what would the conversation look like…..
